Does anyone here work on a unit where they do self-scheduling? I used to and am finding I really miss it! I liked being trusted to know what worked best for me (and truly, the weekends usually do). I don't know why managers think it would create more of a mess -- I think it adds to job satisfaction and less juggling for the managers to do.
Self-scheduling is nice. I prefer it because if I do need a day off I can coordinate with other staff members and get the schedule I need. I can work my job around my life, not the other way around.
The new unit that I'm on doesn't have self-scheduling either, but I find that I can call the scheduler and change pretty much anything I really need to have done. Since I'm on 8-hour nights, I can do after school stuff with my daughter and just schedule doctor appointments for the last part of the day. If I really have to push something to the morning hours, like an errand, I just do it and go straight home to bed. It makes a huge difference that my daughter is now older and is riding a bus and I no longer have to wake up at 1:30 to pick her up.
I wish I could do self scheduling bc it would save so many head aches ( my boss is my head ache) anytime you need a day off you have to post it on a desk calender hanging up with your reason for 68 people to read sucks, and my boss acts like it's a hassel to give you a day off. but that's another bitch session in the making. haha. I'm PRO self scheduling
