I'm from the old school, but finding it doesn't work anymore to show up, resume in hand, and speak with an HR rep about what they have open that you may qualify for. Nowadays, you submit a resume online in response to an ad and hope you may get a response, inviting you to interview.

Does anyone have any techniques or idea on how to get in the door?? I'm a new nurse with only 1 year psych nursing and easily trumped w/experienced nurses. I'd even consider LPN position at this point, but can't even get in front of anyone to discuss it. HELP

Posting your resume on a big job board like Careerbuilder can't hurt but I would recommend one of the healthcare niche registration sites that helps to match you to employers with jobs to offer.

If you have an area in mind where you want to work it's a good idea to research facilities in the area, visit their web sites, and apply directly, too. Even if they aren't posting the job your looking for you can often still apply.

Good luck and let us know how the search goes!

Welcome to site! It can be VERY difficult to get your foot into a hospital. My nursing career mentor is a nurse recruiter and he has said to me for many years, that hospitals are not the easiest place to find a job. And you probably cannot get a job as an LPN... maybe, but probably not likely. The risk exists that although you would b employed in an LPN position, you are an RN and that's a technicality that skirts on the edges of most facilities' malpractice insurance. Stupid, to be sure, but it's there.

I took at job at a nursing home until I could find exactly what I wanted in the hospital and even then, I had to accept a part-time job and keep a PRN nursing home job. It paid off in the long-run though.

Good luck!

I found that HOUNDING them usually works. I call once a day, everyday, and keep my name in front of them. I also send followups notes the MINUTE I leave an interview, the thank you card goes right in the mail. You'd be surprised at how infrequently anyone sends a 'thank you' anymore.
